Wanted finally gets Group I win Saturday, 6th March 2010
Three-year-old colt Wanted has finally broken through for a big race win after producing a gritty performance to claim the Group I Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.
Wanted has competed in Group I sprints at his last four starts, never finishing further back than fourth, the colt consigned to the runner-up stall in three of those runs.
Run under skies which were more akin to the race being renamed ‘the Lightning Stakes’, Wanted shared the speed throughout before eeking out a length win over Eagle Falls.
Starspangledbanner completed a trifecta for horses racing close to the speed in a ‘fast lane’ between eight and 12 horses off the fence, which prevails in straight racing at Flemington.
“It’s terrific,” Moody said. “He’s had a frustrating run of placings in big races this bloke.
“He’s finally got that Group I win on his resume which is great.”
Moody said Wanted’s success showed the stable “might be wrong” about the right way to ride the son of Fastnet Rock.
“We’ve done everything to keep him happy and freshen him up,” Moody said.
“We said to Luke (Nolen) ‘if you want to let him run, don’t fight him’ and to let him do his own thing. We thought he was a better chaser and today we’ve been proved wrong for his last eight runs.”
Moody said Wanted could run in the Group I T J Smith Stakes at Randwick in April and labelled the colt ‘the best sprinter in Australia’.
“He’s probably the most consistent sprinter in Australia and at the moment there may not be a better sprinter in Australia,” he said.
Wanted’s Newmarket Handicap win has justified Widden Stud’s decision to buy a controlling interest in the colt to stand at stud at the end of his career.
Jockey Danny Nikolic said he was “thrilled” with the performance of the third-placed Starspangledbanner at his final Australian start before joining the Aiden O’Brien camp in Ireland.
The $6.50 favourite All Silent settled well back before being pulled to the outside of the course at the 500 metres and passing a few of the stragglers in the run to the line.
What they said – “I gave him a couple with the whip and he kept coming. Maybe we should have been leading on him all along,”
said Luke Nolen, winning rider of Wanted.
“A terrific effort but the winner just had a little break he couldn’t make up,”
said Kerrin McEvoy, rider of Eagle Falls (2nd).
”A brave run. He was in the firing line throughout and gave his all,”
said Danny Nikolic, rider of Starspangledbanner (3rd).
The market: Wanted was a firmer from $15 into $13 while
Eagle Falls eased from $8.50 to $10. Starspangledbanner was a drifter from $7 to $8.50 while
King Pulse was supported from $13 to $10. All Silent eased from $6 to $7 before firming to $6.50. The market closed at 113 percent.
