Early Double Gives Moody Reason To Smile Saturday, 21st November 2009
The signs were ominous before the first race today at Betfair Park Sandown Hillside that Peter Moody would have a favourable day with winners registered at constant intervals.
Saddling up six runners across five races, Moody's afternoon commenced on a perfect note after Unanugget won the first race with stablemate Tonzaticka finishing second.
North East Smile then continued Moody's run of good fortune by winning the aptly named $70,000 Swell Time 0-82 Handicap (1600m) for fillies and mares.
Racing in fourth position throughout, North East Smile moved into the middle of the track in the straight to overwhelm Shylock's Daughter and Constant over the concluding stages.
North East Smile ($3.20-$3.50-$3.30 fav) won by a neck ahead of Shylock's Daughter ($6-$7-$6), who was ridden by Dwayne Dunn after Kerrin McEvoy was indisposed due to illness.
Constant ($7-$9-$8.50) finished third while Soft Sell ran her usual honest race making steady ground from the rear of the field to finish fourth, over two lengths from the winner.
Despised outsider Wadeema ($101) ran a cheeky race finishing in fifth.
Moody was full of praise for Luke Nolen's winning ride post-race, where he achieved to ride North East Smile closer to the speed than usual but still manage to keep his mount happy.
"He gave her a beautiful run from the outside gate, there was a little concern how the race was going to pan out and I think she's a little better ridden quieter but that requires more luck and she got the job done," Moody said.
"She's an immature type of mare that's promised a bit.
"I've probably stuck to her probably a bit too much and she needed to come back (in grade) and learn how to win," Moody added.
Luke Nolen echoed Moody's sentiments in regards to riding North East Smile closer to the speed, but was also of the belief the four-year-old mare was looking for further.
Moody is sure to entwine that advice from his trustworthy stable jockey into his plans for the daughter of Redoute's Choice later this preparation.
"She could probably work through the grades this time of year and hopefully we might the chance of chasing a bit of black-type later on in the season before she goes to stud," Moody said.
"And there are a couple of well known breeders there in Adam Sangster and Gerry Ryan to decide where she goes."
Purchased for $400,000 at the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, North East Smile is out of Group 1 winning At Talaq mare Leica Smile who won the 1996 Australasian Oaks (2000m).
She is also a half-sister to recent multiple city winner Salinas, also trained by Moody and owned by Gerry Ryan.
