Typhoon Tracy leaves Moody breathless Sunday, 1st November 2009
As he watched his brilliant mare Typhoon Tracy annihilate her opposition in the $500,000 group 1 Myer Classic, Peter Moody looked skywards and wondered if life could get any better.
Around two hours earlier he'd stressed over the result of a close photo finish that eventually awarded his gallant filly Headway with her first group 1 triumph. Her victory, although not a complete surprise, was somewhat unexpected in such an even field, but there was far more expectation about the chances of the $2.20 favourite Typhoon Tracy.
After momentarily attempting to cross leaders Jolie's Shinju and Gold Water, jockey Luke Nolen decided to play it safe rather than be caught three wide on the shortest-priced favourite of the day and slipped in behind the pair for some cover.
It would prove to be the race-winning move as Typhoon Tracy loomed ominously on the bend before Nolen released the brakes and set Moody and the crowd alight with a scintillating 4¾ length win.
"Words can't describe it really, she's just one of those horses that makes your job very easy. We went down the Cox Plate path and we had her a bit soft early and she got beat a couple of times, but trained for these distances at six or seven furlongs to a mile, there's not a horse in the country that could roll her, she's a special horse," Moody said.
Typhoon Tracy's breeder and part-owner John Hutchins told Moody that he had always wanted a horse good enough to run in the Cox Plate or a horse good enough to race overseas. While Moody admits that the Cox Plate dream has probably gone by the wayside, he would not rule out embarking on an international campaign with Typhoon Tracy.
The victory was the mare's seventh from 10 starts and her second at the highest level. Nolen had been aboard in all but two of those wins but had missed out on riding the mare in her group 1 Coolmore Stakes victory in Sydney earlier this year, so the win was a deserved reward for his loyalty to the mare and to the Moody stable with which he has enjoyed plenty of success during a six-year association.
As well as the successes, the duo had also overcome their share of tough times. Moody was one of the first on the phone to inquire about Nolen's condition after the popular hoop took a horrific tumble in last year's BTC Sprint at Doomben and was the first to put him back on a horse when he recovered.
Yesterday both men agreed that a group 1 double secured on the greatest day on the Australian racing calendar was the best day of their careers and most certainly a moment to cherish.
"Without a doubt this is my biggest day. Flemington has been terrific to me during Cup week and I've won the majority of my group 1s here, but to win two on one day with my wife and mother here with me is terrific," Moody said.
Nolen was supremely confident going into yesterday's race and not just because of the ease of Typhoon Tracy's last-start victory at Caulfield.
A track gallop at Caulfield early Tuesday morning confirmed in Nolen's mind that he was not only on a leading chance for the group 1 race, he was on the likely winner.
Of the beaten brigade, the Robert Smerdon-trained Lady Lynette added untold worth to her residual value with a group 1 placing at her first test at the top level. Third-placed Zarita continued her good form in mares' grade when running on strongly after enduring a chequered passage early in the straight, while other fancies Hot Danish and Neroli finished alongside in fourth and fifth.
